Carnegie Building
The Carnegie Building, located at 52 West Lorain Street in Oberlin, Ohio, was originally Oberlin's main library and is now home to the geology department classrooms, labs, and offices. Designed by architects Patton and Miller of Chicago and constructed of Amherst sandstone, the four-story building opened in 1908 as a gift from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. Despite a rear addition in 1940, the library space eventually became insufficient and the Seeley G. Mudd Learning Center became the new home of Oberlin College Library in 1974. Carnegie was then reconfigured to house administrative offices and the historic Root Room on the second floor is now used for large campus and community functions.
