In-Space Propulsion Facility
β OpenThe In-Space Propulsion Facility, located in Sandusky, Ohio, United States, is a unique institution operated by NASA. It is the world's only facility capable of testing full-scale upper-stage launch vehicles and rocket engines under simulated high-altitude conditions. The facility, formerly known as the Spacecraft Propulsion Research Facility (B-2), offers a complete "test-as-you-fly" environment to thoroughly ground test flight hardware and reduce the likelihood of costly flight failures. At the In-Space Propulsion Facility, engines producing up to 400,000-lb of thrust can be fired for single or multiple burn missions using cryogenic or storable fuels. The facility can simulate low ambient pressures, low-background temperatures, and dynamic solar heating, replicating the environment encountered during orbital or interplanetary travel. Tests conducted at the facility include the successful testing of the Boeing Delta III cryogenic upper stage in 1998.
