Tappan Square
β OpenTappan Square is a 13-acre green space located at 67 North Main Street in Oberlin, Ohio, United States. This park serves as a connection between the college and the city of Oberlin. Legend has it that the founders of Oberlin, John Shipherd and Philo Stewart, prayed under an elm tree in the southeast corner and decided to build their community there. Although the historic elm tree was removed in 1965 due to disease, Tappan Square was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1966. The park is named after Arthur Tappan, a 19th-century abolitionist who played a crucial role in the college's financial stability during its early years. In addition to its beautiful trees, benches, and swings, Tappan Square also features the Clark Bandstand, the Memorial Arch, and two boulders known as the Rocks, which often display spray-painted messages.
