"I am a new patient with New River Family Wellness. In the last seven years I have been a patient of five primary care providers and have seen them mostly to manage my asthma; they have all been good medical people, but they keep retiring or changing their practice out of primary care. I was ready for a different kind of practice and provider and have found a GREAT practice and doctor. I have saw Dr. Sullivan for the first time in September 2023 and for the second time in January 2024. As part of routine new patient testing she had my A1C measured in September and was concerned that it was elevated above normal but not into the diabetic range. I emailed her other measurements over the last 10 years showing the same thing. When I saw in January 2024 for an asthma issue, after we'd dealt with the asthma trouble she said she had something important to tell me: She had wondered why an otherwise healthy, active 67 year old man with no family history or risk factors for diabetes would have an elevated A1C for years without developing diabetes. So she put some thought and effort and research into this question. She now thinks that my asthma and habit of regular blood donation may cause my blood system to hold on to red blood cells longer than the usual 120 day average life, and this would expose my red cells to normal blood sugar levels for longer than normal time and this would cause an elevated A1C without actual high blood sugar levels. I am astonished by this level of care and thought that Dr. Sullivan gave to a patient she has seen only twice! Other primary care providers have either ignored my elevated A1C value or given me routine advice about reducing carbohydrates in my diet. Dr. Sullivan dug deeper and I am as pleased as I could be with the care I am getting from her!"
