Lower Haw River State Natural Area
The Lower Haw River State Natural Area is a stunning park located at 160 Bynum Church Road in Pittsboro, North Carolina, United States. This area is owned by NC State Parks and spans approximately 1,025 acres along the Haw River in Chatham County. The natural area is rated as Exceptional for aquatic habitat and Very High for habitats and riverbank lands by the NC Natural Heritage Program. It is home to endangered species and offers beautiful rugged scenery for visitors to enjoy. The Friends of Lower Haw River State Natural Area (FLOHA) is an all-volunteer group dedicated to supporting this park and the Chatham County segment of the Haw River State Trail. FLOHA is a local chapter of the statewide nonprofit North Carolina Friends of State Parks, Inc. The Lower Haw River State Natural Area was added to the NC State Parks System in 2004 and offers limited facilities, making it an ideal place for low impact activities such as birding, nature photography, fishing, hiking, and paddling.
