Maxton Town Office
Welcome to the Maxton Town Office, a cornerstone of local government located at 201 McCaskill Avenue, Maxton, North Carolina. Nestled in a community rich with history, Maxton traces its roots back to the 1700s when settlers first arrived along the Shoe Hill Creek and Lumber River. The town has undergone several name changes—from its incorporation as Shoe Hill in 1874, to Tilden and Quhele, before finally becoming Maxton in 1887, in honor of its Scottish settlers. Education has always been a pillar of Maxton's heritage. In 1841, just outside the town, John Gilchrist Jr. established Floral College, the first women’s college in North Carolina to award degrees. Maxton is also notable for being the site of the first school opened by pioneering black educator Charles N. Hunter. Hunter's legacy continues through his efforts to uplift African American communities by focusing on economic advancement.
