WakeMed Children's - Pediatric Primary Care

"Im extremely frustrated and highly disappointed with the lack of communication from the workers at the front desk. I had an appointment scheduled for my daughter to get her 2 month shots and the appointment was canceled by the pediatrician the morning of and rescheduled a month later, which to me is unacceptable due to it being on such short notice. Next, I’m a Veteran that applied for Champ VA which takes at least 6-8 weeks to process applications and I was made aware the day before this “rescheduled” appointment that I needed to self pay over $300 or else I would be denied care until my insurance becomes active. This would not have been a problem for me if I was made aware of this information in advance, not the day before the appointment. This office had called me numerous times requesting my insurance information prior to my appointment and NEVER made me aware of this until the day before my appointment. And each time they would call, I would be ready to give them updates on whether or not my application had processed, because I’m constantly calling Champ Va to check on my daughters insurance application. As a service member who dedicated almost 10 years of my life to give those receptionist the freedom to sit on their butts behind a desk and work safely in the healthcare industry, I am beyond disappointed. And being that they work with Veterans and know how long the VA takes, this should have been discussed way prior to my appointment if it were a problem. They know that the Va takes a while and they know once an application is approved, the insurance is retroactive, so they will get everything that is due to them. They should be ashamed and management needs to do better with communicating with their patients. 1 day prior to an appointment is not ample time to notify a patient of a required self-pay amount of $300 before their child can be seen. And denying my offer to pay atleast $50 was disgusting. They have no sympathy whatsoever. I’m just glad to be switching pediatricians."

"We love the Wakemed Ped in Clayton and that’s where we usually go, but my daughter needed to be seen for an emergency appointment. We saw Dr. Carrie Dow-smith and she was by far the worst pediatrician I’ve taken my daughter to. She didn’t listen to me or my husband, we had to get urine from my 2 year old and she had been previously traumatized by the last doctor visit getting a catheter so we avoided that this go round, but the doctor failed to mention if we didn’t do the catheter that she wasn’t going to send the urine off to culture. So now it’s 4 days later found out yesterday she didn’t send it in. My daughter is getting sicker. Had to go to the ER with my 2 year old and bring along my 8 month old because this doctor decided she wasn’t going to send the urine off that took us 4 hours to get and had to put a bag on my daughter in the office. We spend ALL day at the doctor office and then they told us to wait for them to bring paper work not to leave.., EVERYONE LEFT THE OFFICE EVEN THE DOCTOR AND HAD ME, MY HUSBAND, 2 year old, AND 8 month old sitting in the office waiting for them to print the aftervisit summary for 35 min when I realized what are we doing??? I asked them and they printed it off. This place is ridiculous. Don’t let your kid see that doctor she needs some more training or something. Can’t even complete a sentence without throwing Ummmmmmmm in there 15 times. SMH. Get it together lady. The lady we saw that was the doctor in training was amazing and I wish she had been the doctor we had seen and didn’t have to see that other crazy woman. My poor baby is having to go back to the doctor in 2 days because of her laziness"

"The lack of communication, caring, and correct information given to parents is horrific. I have never left a bad review but I do not want another parent to go through what we have at this practice. Our 8 week old had a brain ultrasound, the office sent us to the wrong location and said we didn’t need an appointment, we did in fact need an appointment and only certain radiologists perform neonatal ultrasounds. The doctor promised we would have results the same day and we had to beg someone to answer us 3 business days later. There is no caring for parents or or children. Do not go here."

"They will question you about the charges from delivery and why you haven’t paid every time you come in. Sorry we don’t have 4000$ laying around. But we pay them 190$ a month and I paid them 500$ off of my HSA card. It’s busy and crowded every time we come here. We have never been seen on time. We will be looking for another ped after 2 visits. And I will not be questioned about a balance from the delivery every time I come in here. We actually have insurance so we have to pay our bill. It’s been only 2 months since delivery. Front desk staff 0/10. Nurses are fine and so is the PA and Dr.’s but you can find a better pediatricians office without looking very hard. Update: we will have to come back for the last shot we needed. Because their quota for insurance patients is already met. They have the shot. But it’s not for people with insurance. So we will have to come back again and pay another office visit fee."
