Billy Johnson Playground
Billy Johnson Playground, located on East 67th Street in New York, New York, is a popular tourist attraction known for its innovative design inspired by Central Park's landscapes. This playground features accessible surfaces, water features, sand tables, and adaptive swings, making it an inclusive space for children of all abilities. Designed by landscape architect M. Paul Friedberg, the playground includes custom features such as a wooden shelter, plantings, trails, a kid-size version of Gapstow Bridge, and two granite slides that mimic the experience of sliding down the Park's rock outcrops. In 2018, the Central Park Conservancy completed a renovation of Billy Johnson Playground, preserving its rustic character while enhancing play opportunities and accessibility. The playground was originally funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Charitable Trust and named in memory of Billy Johnson, who tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident. Central Park has a total of 21 playgrounds, each with its own unique design and character, all of which are regularly updated to meet changing safety and accessibility standards.
