Support for teen mothers in Bronx, New York

One inspiring story comes from teen mom Yoselin, who wanted the best for her son Jayden but felt she lacked the necessary support. By enrolling Jayden in the Rising Ground Parent-Child Home Program at Brownell School, Yoselin was able to learn positive parent-child interactions and empower herself to be a part of Jayden's education. With the help of a dedicated Home Visitor who brought books and educational toys twice a week, Jayden quickly developed a love of learning and is now on track to do well in school. Grace H Dodge Career and Technical High School is a former institution that was closed in 2015 due to poor performance. However, the building now houses three new small schools: Crotona International High School, The High School for Energy and Technology, and the Bronx Academy for Software Engineering. The school previously served a needy population, including young mothers and pregnant girls, with nearly all students qualifying for free lunch. The student body included a large proportion of English language learners and students receiving special education services. The school struggled with low graduation rates and students reading below grade level. Despite some successful programs like the mock trial team, overall attendance and graduation rates were low.
