Reviews
"This library is gorgeous! The stained glass windows are breathtaking but I’m not sure why they decided to ruin the interior with such an ugly, 2011 wall paper that looks like it was AI generated or something. This place could be an iconic landmark in NYC if they painted the interior a moody color, or even a regular neutral. Ugly wallpaper aside, the library is amazing and has a ton of books available and recommendations on display. Came on a Saturday afternoon and it was pretty crowded, so if you want a place to sit go early!"
"One of the best examples of Victorian Gothic architecture with an impressive collection of historical records pertaining to local queer communities in the village. My phone camera is unfortunately substandard in capturing the splendor of the interiors."
"A nice beautiful place to work/ study. They have plenty space and book collection. They also sometimes have gathering on the first floor. When I first came they have a cheese platter for an event."
"This library is my favorite NYC library and I have visited about 30 across Manhattan, BK and Queens. This one has incredible history and amazing character. It used to be a court house and housed prisoners downstairs. Someone told me once that back in the day female prisoners would holler out at passersby because the window only just barely looked out onto the street (the main portion is in the basement- see photo below ). I found that story quite interesting! The building itself is spectacular with a spiral staircase and stained glass windows. What an absolute privilege it must be to work here and spend ones time in this sanctuary. The workers are kind and a joy to interact with. And every visitor is respectful so it’s quiet- a perfect place to peruse and ponder. They have a great selection of books and DVD’s. They even have an Archaeology section! You’ll come for the architecture but stay for the idyllic New York moment this tranquil piece of history offers."
"A secret surprise! WOW! We just popped in here to get a break from the rain and ended up staying a while. Perfect spot to chill and take in the amazing architecture of this hidden historic gem! The entrance level floor is the children’s reading room and is full of laughter and chatter of delighted children. The “basement” level is a cozy quiet space with lots of tables that are equipped with outlets to charge your poor dying cellphone. The ceiling of this reading room is the real charmer. It’s boasts a series of arched brick treatments and feels a little like a wine cellar although still very spacious and inviting. Newspapers and a comfy seating area are provided for guests who want to take a break from the busy streets of the city. Be sure to explore the amazing spiral stone staircase to the 3rd floor reading room. Even if you don’t have to check out a book, step in quietly to admire the beautiful 2 story gothic windows. So much history and amazing architecture! You won’t be disappointed."
