Herman Smith-Johannsen, born on June 15, 1875, in Horten, Norway, was a trailblazer in the world of skiing, credited with establishing ski jumps and trails across regions from Ontario to the Adirondack Mountains in New York. He moved to Pelham in 1916, where he managed a business importing heavy equipment, shuttling between New York and Montreal, before permanently settling in Canada in 1929.
