New York State Women Veterans Memorial
The New York State Women Veterans Memorial, located on Madison Avenue in Albany, honors the contributions and sacrifices of women in military service over the past two hundred years. Surrounded by Japanese zelkova trees, the memorial features an eight-foot-high bronze statue of Liberty breaking free from colonization, symbolizing the spirit and commitment of women who have defended the nation. Flanking the statue are bronze bas-relief sculptures depicting women veterans from all eras of service, along with engraved historical plaques. Governor George E. Pataki emphasized the importance of acknowledging and remembering the service of New York State women veterans at the memorial's dedication in December 1998. With over 1.2 million women veterans in the U.S., including 61,000 in New York State, the memorial serves as a place to honor their service and sacrifice. Visitors can also explore the nearby Empire State Plaza and New York State Capitol while visiting the memorial.
