Born on September 10, 1948, in Cumberland, Virginia, Garfield M. Langhorn was a courageous individual who served his country with distinction. While serving as a radio operator with Troop C, 7th Squadron (Airmobile), 17th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Aviation Brigade, Pfc. Langhorn displayed exceptional valor. On January 15, 1969, during a rescue mission near Plei Djereng in Pleiku Province, South Vietnam, he made the ultimate sacrifice by throwing himself on an enemy grenade to save the lives of his fellow soldiers.
