Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge
β OpenWelcome to the Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge, a historic and iconic tourist attraction located at the Marine Parkway Bridge in Queens, New York. Opened in 1937 by the Marine Parkway Authority, this remarkable bridge was designed to provide much-needed access to the beautiful Rockaway Peninsula. Prior to its construction, the peninsula was accessible only by ferry or a lengthy detour around Jamaica Bay. At the time of its completion, the bridge boasted the world's longest vertical lift span, and its uniquely tapered, curled tower tops added an artistic flair to the structure. The bridge's significance extends beyond its architectural marvels. It played a crucial role in the development of the surrounding areas, including the creation of the Jacob Riis Parking Field and the enhancement of Jacob Riis Park in collaboration with the city's Department of Parks. In 1940, the Marine Parkway Authority became part of the Triborough Bridge Authority, marking a new chapter in the bridge's history.
