Designed by the Olmsted Brothers, the landscape architects behind New York's Central Park, the park features pink blazes marking the trail with signs identifying each site along the way. The History Trail allows visitors to learn about the early years of the Watchung Reservation and the land's uses before becoming a park. The trail starts and ends at the Trailside Nature & Science Center, but can also be accessed from parking areas at the Deserted Village of Feltville and Lake Surprise. This virtual version of the trail is accessible to people with disabilities and includes features to help hikers identify trees and animal life along the way.
The Loop Playground
The Loop Playground, located in Mountainside, New Jersey, is a popular tourist attraction and park within the Trailside Nature & Science Center in the Watchung Reservation. This environmental education center offers a serene setting with woodlands, fields, lakes, streams, and hiking trails, making it the perfect place to have fun while learning about the natural world. Renovated in September 2006, the Center features 4,500 square feet of interactive, state-of-the-art exhibits, including a towering 34-foot American beech tree exhibit.
