The institution focuses on studying pan-European martial arts from the years 1300-1700, particularly the German longsword school of fencing in the tradition of Master Johannes Liechtenauer. Students are encouraged to study and train both independently and with the club to interpret and reconstruct these ancient martial arts. The NJHFA also utilizes various sources in the Liechtenauer tradition to aid in this reconstruction process. In addition to the longsword, members of the institution study a variety of weapons from the medieval and Renaissance periods, including sword and buckler, dussack, rapier, dagger, messer, sabre, and more.
