Baylor Massacre Burial Site
● OpenWelcome to the Baylor Massacre Burial Site, a historic park nestled within the serene wooded landscape of Bergen County at 486 Rivervale Road, River Vale, New Jersey. This poignant site commemorates the tragic events of September 28, 1778, when members of the 3rd Continental Light Dragoons were ambushed and slain by British soldiers under the command of General Charles “No Flint” Grey. In the aftermath, the fallen soldiers were hastily buried in tanning vats along the Hackensack River, fearing the return of the British troops. Their remains were uncovered during an archaeological investigation in the 1960s and were respectfully reinterred at this site in 1974. Visitors to the Baylor Massacre Burial Site can explore the park's historical significance through interpretive panels that vividly recount the events of the Baylor Massacre. The burial ground is marked by an original millstone, serving as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made during the American Revolutionary War.
