The house was built by one of the first Dutch families to settle in Western Essex County and has been recognized as one of the 10 most endangered historic places in New Jersey. The organization recently held a successful fundraiser to help start significant exterior repairs and secure funding for the eventual purchase of the property from Fairfield Township. With their new official tax-exempt status, the Friends of Van Ness House are now able to apply for grants and accept donations towards the restoration and upkeep of the structure.
