Harriet E. Wilson Statue
β OpenThe Harriet E. Wilson Statue is a tribute to the groundbreaking African American author from Milford, New Hampshire. Harriet E. Wilson, also known as "Hattie," published the novel "Our Nig; or Sketches From the Life of A Free Black" in 1859, aiming to earn enough money to survive. The novel, which was initially believed to be the work of a white author, tells a powerful and controversial narrative that continues to resonate with readers worldwide. The statue is located at 123 South Street in Milford, New Hampshire, and serves as a reminder of Wilson's contributions to literature and her struggle for recognition. The Harriet E. Wilson Project commissioned the memorial, which was donated to the Town of Milford on October 6, 2006, by Fern Cunningham.
