Ball Mill Resurgence Natural Area

This natural area features a stunning karst formation known as a resurgence, where a sinkhole fills with water and overflows into nearby Blue Spring Branch during heavy rains. The basin is 20 feet in diameter and five feet deep, with a towering 50-foot limestone wall on one side. The swirling water inside the sinkhole polishes rocks, giving it the name "ball mill." Owned by the L-A-D Foundation, dedicated to sustainable forest management and conservation of natural and cultural areas in Missouri, Ball Mill Resurgence is part of the extensive karst network in Perry County, known for its high density of caves. The Foundation, founded by renowned conservationist Leo Drey, also manages Pioneer Forest in the Missouri Ozarks.
