Saint Luke's Hospital Crittenton Children's Center, located at 10918 Elm Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri, is a renowned institution specializing in the behavioral and mental health of children and their families. With over 125 years of experience, our multidisciplinary treatment teams utilize evidence-based therapies to help children regulate their emotions, build communication skills, and develop resilience.
As part of the Saint Luke's Health System, Crittenton Children's Center offers personalized care by a nationally recognized staff, ensuring that children receive the highest quality of treatment. Our programs include short-term care for mental health crises, long-term psychiatric care for high-risk adolescents, evidence-based therapy for mental health disorders, and support for teens struggling with substance abuse.
In addition to our clinical programs, Crittenton also offers Trauma Smart®, a successful trauma intervention model for children in preschool through 12th grade. We are always seeking caring volunteers, particularly for our mentorship program, to provide emotional support and guidance to teens.
Supported by the Children's Services Fund of Jackson County and The Clay County Children's Services Fund, Crittenton's programs aim to strengthen families and protect the mental health and well-being of children. "As with many others, I would give this place 0 stars if possible. Was admitted against my will at 17 and stayed for a week; of course their doctors wanted me here longer. My parents and I have talked about this evil place so many times over the years. My mother said they repeatedly wanted to put me on heavy meds but she refused. To this day I’m thankful for her refusal. I saw horrible things in this facility, it was like a prison, and numerous staff (including doctors) were unprofessional. I’m in my 40s now and still traumatized by this place, thus my review today. Shocked it is still open and deeply hope it provides better treatment for children and teens nowadays!"
"Service was absolutely abominable! I took my pet parrot here to receive counseling, and I was DENIED SERVICE due to their ‘policy’. They said they do not allow pets and I would have to take her elsewhere. My conure has been experiencing behavioral issues, and once I thought I finally found somewhere that would be able to accommodate her complex needs and big personality, I was turned away! This has SEVERELY traumatized my little Starfire, resulting in even more behavior issues! I can not believe this happened in a ‘free country’. UNBELIEVABLE. DO BETTER."
"Our experience with them as foster parents has discouraged us from fostering ever again. We loved the kids we fostered, still have our license and have been asked by our licensing worker to open our home to foater again. However the way the Crittenton caseworker treated us as foster parents was horrific and clearly shows how the agency falls down on selecting quality staff and/or fails to train them properly."
"I was there awhile ago. They take no regard to the needs of the patients who are there seeking help either voluntarily or involuntarily. I asked them to not contact my mother because she was an abusive figure in my life and they did just that then proceeded to yell at me for something I said awhile before I was admitted which what I said wasn't the reason I was there I was there for suicidal thoughts and attempt. Some staff were nice but more than the some I encountered were really inconsiderate to the patients needs."
"this whole facility needs to be shut down. i was yelled at and publicly humiliated multiple times in my 5 day stay. i called a worker by their name instead of mister and i was screamed at in front of my entire unit. i was also yelled at and sent to out of group because i couldn’t share a rule but the rule board was too far away and i couldn’t read it. my therapist tried to share information from my private life with the entire group. i was again sent to my room because everyone else shared but therapy is confidential and i don’t think anyone’s information should have been shared. multiple times i heard other people’s private information because they’d answer calls on speaker. they refused to give me clothes for the first day because i wouldn’t give blood. which hasn’t been a problem anywhere else. when we went to the gym the coach literally grabbed me and forced me to run laps with him. a guy came in during a trip and instead of sedating him and making sure he was okay they just locked him in a room where he was able to hurt himself. all while they stood outside the door and poked fun at him, only making things worse. they had the worst food i’ve ever tasted. the salad tasted like they picked the leaves off the trees outside. there was one worker named Fitz that was cool and Rodney was okay at times but every other staff member in the boys unit was extremely unprofessional and should not still have their jobs."
