Keweenaw Bay Indian Community
The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, located at 102 North Superior Avenue in Baraga, Michigan, is a vital institution that serves as a library for its members. The institution is guided by the principles of self-sufficiency and prioritizes activities that benefit future generations. The logo of the community features an Eagle, symbolizing strength and healing, surrounded by a circle representing unity and resilience. The date of Dec. 17, 1936 is significant as it marks the approval of the KBIC Constitution and Bylaws. The institution also incorporates seven sun rays to signify the seven generations and teachings of the Ojibwe culture. The KBIC, part of the Lake Superior Band of Chippewa Indians, has dual land bases on the Keweenaw Bay Peninsula and serves members in several counties. Established under the treaty of 1854, the KBIC L’Anse Reservation is the oldest and largest reservation in Michigan.
