Bates Maple Syrup
● OpenBates Maple Syrup is a family-run institution located at 2800 North Peterson Road in Ludington, Michigan. The institution specializes in producing 100% natural maple syrup on their farm, continuing a tradition that dates back to 1904 when Carl Christiansen first started producing maple syrup on the property. The Bates children and neighbors have been involved in the production process for generations, with Fred Bates taking over the farm in 1961 and becoming the largest producer of Maple Syrup in Michigan in the late 1960s. Today, Bates Maple Syrup averages 3,000 taps a year and is classified as a hobbyist operation. The institution is known for its delicious product and the camaraderie among family and friends who work together to produce it. Visitors can see the Bates boys in action at the sugar shack in March, with Fred managing the operation and his wife Cathi handling canning and sales. Bates Maple Syrup is available for purchase online and at local markets, including The Jam Farm.
