The Tauber Family Railroad, located in Royal Oak, Michigan, is a beloved institution at the Detroit Zoo. Open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with gates closing at 4:30 p.m., this miniature railroad has been delighting visitors since 1931. With two complete trains of six coaches each and one standby, all three locomotives were generously donated by the Chrysler Corp. In 1982-83, the locomotives were renovated with new coaches, and in 2008, they were refurbished once again with new engines, gears, wheels, and bodies. Whether you board at the Chrysler Main Station or the Africa Station, located near the rhino habitat, you're in for a relaxing ride through the Zoo.
