Sampsons Island Wildlife Sanctuary
Sampsons Island Wildlife Sanctuary is a beautiful park and tourist attraction located in Barnstable, Massachusetts, United States. This sanctuary is part of the undeveloped Sampsons Island/Dead Neck barrier beach system, just off the Cape Cod mainland. It is home to a variety of bird species, including piping plovers, least terns, and common terns, which nest on the island's beaches, tidal flats, and salt marsh. Because of its importance as a bird habitat, Sampsons Island has been designated as an Important Bird Area. Managed by Mass Audubon Cape Cod and Coastal Waterbird Program, this sanctuary offers limited access to the island's beaches on the Cotuit Bay side during spring and summer. Other beaches on the island are closed to boats and pedestrians to protect the nesting areas of the birds. Visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of the island and observe the diverse bird species that call it home.
Sandy Neck Lighthouse
Sandy Neck Lighthouse is a historic tourist attraction located in Barnstable, Massachusetts, United States. Established in 1826, the lighthouse has a rich history of keepers and challenges, including storms, ice, and erosion. The lighthouse features a forty-eight-foot-tall circular brick tower, and unique iron hoops and staves were added in 1887 to strengthen the structure. The lighthouse was eventually automated in 1931, and the original lantern room was removed. The property has changed ownership over the years, with the Hinckley family eventually acquiring it in 1950. The Sandy Neck Lighthouse Restoration Committee was formed in 2003 to preserve and restore the historic tower. Visitors can explore the lighthouse and learn about its fascinating history through keeper logs and inspection reports.
