Old Burial Ground: A Historic Journey Through Cambridge's Past
Nestled in the heart of Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Old Burial Ground stands as a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of the region. Established in 1636, just a year after the founding of Harvard College, this historic cemetery offers visitors a unique glimpse into the early years of Cambridge and Harvard University.
Located at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Garden Street, the Old Burial Ground serves as the final resting place for many notable figures from Harvard's history, including presidents such as Henry Dunster, John Leverett, and Edward Holyoke. The cemetery is also home to the graves of other influential families whose names have become synonymous with iconic locations in and around Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston, such as Allston, Brattle, Craigie, Davis, Hancock, Porter, and Tufts.
The cemetery's serene two-acre site is dotted with weathered headstones, tilting gently towards the sky, each bearing witness to the passage of time. Despite its age, many of the 1,218 known graves remain visible, though it is believed that hundreds more were interred here during the colonial era.
As you explore the grounds, you'll uncover centuries of tales—from the settlement of Newtowne, later renamed Cambridge, to its development as a frontier town bordered by untamed wilderness and the Charles River. The Old Burial Ground is more than just a cemetery; it is a place where history comes alive, offering stories of presidents, professors, and people from all walks of life.
Visitors can also gain insights from Harvard experts who answer random questions about the cemetery's history, adding an educational dimension to the experience. One notable tombstone belongs to Harvard President Edward Holyoke, who famously remarked, "If any man wishes to be humbled and mortified, let him become President of Harvard College."
While strolling through the Old Burial Ground, one can't help but feel a connection to the past. This historic site invites reflection on the lives and legacies of those who helped shape the early years of Cambridge and Harvard University. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a student, or a curious traveler, the Old Burial Ground offers a captivating journey through time in one of America's most storied cities.

"It's such an amazing old cemetery. It's so amazing to see such old dates!!!!!! My youngest and middle daughter enjoyed reading the headstones. My oldest chose not to enter but read some headstones from afar."
"Lovely burial ground dating from the 17th century filled with interesting gravestones and patriot graves. Pathways are quite uneven and care needs to be taken visiting graves. Parking nearby."
"This place is rather eerie to visit at night. As a historical place, it doesn't seem maintained or renovated. Perhaps that's by intention, but many of the gravestones have weathered away over the centuries."
"Beautiful, historic cemetery, actually named "Old BURYING Ground", but Google denied my change request, despite the photo of the placard in front of the cemetery which clearly reads "Old Burying Ground"..... But they obviously don't understand the nuances of place names and the confusion it can cause geneology enthusiasts.... Anyway, this is a unique and historic burying ground with Graves dating to the 1600s. Many key figures from the early pilgrim/Puritan/European settlers of the Boston area are buried here, including some of Harvard's earliest graduates. The Episcopal church on the NW corner of the cemetery has records of the names of all who are buried here on file in their offices. They are kind and helpful."
"Beautiful Historical Cemetery. Unique gravestones."
