Royall House and Slave Quarters
β OpenWelcome to the Royall House and Slave Quarters, a poignant museum and tourist attraction located at 15 George Street, Medford, Massachusetts. This historic site serves as a powerful place of memory and reflection, shedding light on the intertwined narratives of wealth and bondage in pre-Revolutionary Massachusetts. Once the home of the Royalls, the largest slaveholding family in the state, and at least sixty enslaved individuals, the museum stands as one of the few remaining freestanding quarters in the North where enslaved people lived and worked. Our mission is to honor the lives of those who were enslaved and to explore the resistance and activism of both enslaved and free Black people in the eighteenth century. Through our exhibits and programs, we are dedicated to telling the history of slavery and freedom and highlighting the enduring legacy of enslavement that perpetuates systemic inequalities today.
