About the Business

Welcome to the Fine Arts Library at Harvard University, located in the heart of Cambridge, Massachusetts. As Harvard's premier resource for the study of the history of art and architecture, our library offers an unparalleled collection of global materials that cater to students, researchers, and art enthusiasts alike.
Our light-filled Reading Room on the main level provides an inspiring space for exploration and study. For those seeking a more private study environment, a limited number of carrels are available within our book stacks. Researchers are also invited to delve into our Special Collections Study Room, which houses an array of historical photographs, rare books, manuscript facsimiles, auction sales catalogs, and archival collections. Please note that these materials are non-circulating and must be viewed on-site.
While enjoying the library's resources, patrons are welcome to have coffee in an approved container in the Reading Room. However, only water in secure, tight containers is permitted in the stacks and carrels, and no beverages are allowed in the Special Collections Study Room.
The Fine Arts Library is proud to host a variety of exhibitions that showcase diverse aspects of visual culture. Current and past exhibitions include "Seeing Blue: Images of Sun Time" and "Picturing the Sultan: Images of Ottoman rulers," among others. These exhibitions reflect our commitment to supporting and advancing scholarly and creative pursuits at Harvard and beyond.
Since its inception as part of the Fogg Art Museum in 1895, the library has been integral to Harvard's academic programs in art and architectural history and museum studies. It continues to uphold values of artistic and intellectual freedom, diversity, anti-racism, and community inclusion.
We invite you to explore the Fine Arts Library, a cornerstone of Harvard's dedication to fostering an environment of learning, creativity, and connection in the arts.
