This park holds historical significance as it sits across the street from the former home of Daniel Carroll, a prominent figure in American history. The park features accessible play equipment, a basketball court, and picnic tables nestled in a wooded area between Forest Glen Road and the Capital Beltway. The park was acquired by M-NCPPC in 1969. Acorn Urban Park
● OpenAcorn Urban Park is a charming and historic destination located in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland. Visitors can explore the iconic Acorn Gazebo, spring grotto, and peaceful shade trees in this small park. The gazebo, dating back to the 19th century, was originally part of Francis Preston Blair's plantation, Silver Spring. Blair, a newspaper publisher and friend of President Andrew Jackson, discovered the mica-flecked spring on the property and was so enchanted by it that he purchased the land and established a plantation. The Acorn Gazebo was commissioned by Blair to commemorate the oak tree where he proposed to his wife, Eliza, in 1812. The park also features a marble nymph, grotto, and stone slab from Alfred Ray's quarry, all adding to the park's historic charm. In 1942, the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission acquired the park to protect the spring from development. The Acorn Gazebo was moved to the public land in 1946, and the grotto area was redesigned and dedicated in 1955. The park also features events such as the Woodlawn Manor House Tour, offering visitors a chance to explore more of the area's history and heritage. Don't miss the chance to visit Acorn Urban Park and immerse yourself in its rich history and natural beauty.
