Seneca Mill and Quarry Ruins
The Seneca Mill and Quarry Ruins, located at 13201 Tschiffely Mill Road in Poolesville, Maryland, United States, are a fascinating historical site within the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. The ruins of the Seneca Stonecutting Mill date back to the late 1700s and remained in operation until 1900. The reddish sandstone blocks used in the locks and lockhouses throughout the park were sourced from the Seneca Quarry on the west side of Seneca Creek. To visit the ruins, park at the Seneca Creek Aqueduct and walk a short distance upstream to find the trail leading to the mill. Walk along the trail, which turns into a dirt road, for about five minutes until you reach the ruins of the stonecutting mill. Explore the well-worn path that leads into the building, and take in the history of this 1837 structure.
