Fore River Sanctuary
β OpenLocated in Portland, Maine, the Fore River Sanctuary is a beautiful 85-acre park with over 70 miles of trails and green space to explore. Sponsored by Adopt-A-Trail partner Dr. David Kerr and Wyman's, this sanctuary is home to Jewell Falls, Portland's only natural waterfall, and the former Cumberland and Oxford Canal. The diverse habitats in this sanctuary provide excellent bird-watching opportunities where salt and freshwater marshes meet. Owned by a mix of private landowners, Portland Trails, and the city, the Fore River Sanctuary is a great example of collaboration to preserve green spaces. Trails are marked with different colors for easy navigation, and maps are available for reference. The land around Jewell Falls was donated by the family of Tom Jewell, one of Portland Trails' founders.
