Plaquemine Lock State Historic Site
β ClosedLocated at 57730 Main Street in Plaquemine, Louisiana, the Plaquemine Lock State Historic Site is a popular tourist attraction with a rich history. This site was once a vital navigational route, connecting the Mississippi River to the heartland of Louisiana through Bayou Plaquemine. Designed by Colonel George W. Goethals, the lock was completed in 1909 and was known for its innovative engineering design and impressive freshwater lift of 51 feet. Over the years, the lock played a significant role in promoting settlement and economic prosperity in the region. However, increased river traffic after World War II led to the construction of larger locks at Port Allen, resulting in the closure of the Plaquemine Lock in 1961. Despite its closure, the lock's historical significance was recognized in 1972 when it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
