Sanford Museum & Planetarium
The Sanford Museum & Planetarium, located at 117 East Willow Street in Cherokee, Iowa, is a popular tourist attraction and educational institution. Open to the public on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on weekends from Noon to 5:00 p.m., the museum features exhibits on Archaeology, Art, Astronomy, Geology, History, Natural History, and Paleontology. Founded in 1951 through a generous trust fund established by Mr. & Mrs. W.A. Sanford in memory of their son Tiel, the museum offers public programs every Sunday and Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. Additionally, the museum hosts programs for groups and schools during the week by reservation.
Aurelia Park
Aurelia Park is a beautiful 9-hole golf course located on 50 acres of rolling landscape in Aurelia, Iowa. The course features a Par 35 layout with numerous trees lining the fairways, sand traps, and water hazards to challenge golfers of all skill levels. In addition to golf, the park offers a variety of amenities including picnic tables, a tennis court, basketball court, swing set, slide, and other outdoor play equipment for children. Visitors can also rent the shelter house which includes a stove, microwave, refrigerators, picnic tables, and serving counters. Next door is a heated outdoor swimming pool with a diving board and shaded seating area. The Aurelia Youth League organizes summer baseball and softball programs for children ages 5 to 14, while the Cherokee County Conservation Board offers opportunities for camping, picnicking, hiking, fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities in the area. With a range of facilities and activities available, Aurelia Park is a great destination for outdoor recreation in Iowa.
