The cemetery spans over 2.75 acres and is steeped in rich history, dating back to the mid-19th century when it was originally part of Oakland Cemetery. Keokuk National Cemetery is part of a proud tradition of national cemeteries established to inter the remains of Union soldiers from the Civil War. The site was donated to the U.S. government by the city of Keokuk, and it became an essential burial ground for soldiers who perished in nearby Army hospitals during the war. Today, it continues to serve as a place of remembrance and respect for those who served in the armed forces.
