Originally a part of the Kingsbury Ordnance Plant, which produced ammunition for World War II and the Korean War, the land was deeded to the state of Indiana in 1965 for wildlife management purposes. Revenues for the operation and maintenance of the area come from the sale of hunting, fishing, and trapping licenses, as well as federal programs aimed at fish and wildlife restoration.
