Originally established to support organized youth hockey in the area, The Ice Box has since expanded to become a hub for high school teams, senior leagues, and Irish Youth Hockey teams. In 1981, South Bend Youth Hockey, Inc. was formed to operate The Ice Box, and in 1999, a $2.5 million expansion added a second rink and facilities to accommodate the growing demand for ice sports in the community.
