I&M Canal Toll Collectors House
● OpenThe I&M Canal Toll Collectors House is a historic tourist attraction located at 1221 Columbus Street in Ottawa, Illinois. This is the only remaining toll house from the 1800s, offering visitors a unique insight into the past. The building was constructed in 1849 by Albert F. Dow, the first toll collector in Ottawa. It was used for collecting tolls until 1926 and is now open for tours by appointment. Visitors can explore the small 16’ x 24’ building and learn about the history of the I&M Canal and its importance in transportation during the Lincoln era. The toll logbook, rope bed, and stories from the tour guide provide a fascinating look into life along the canal. Donations are accepted for admission, and tours are considered easy in difficulty.
