Center for black studies
The Center for Black Studies at Northern Illinois University, located at 621 West Lincoln Highway in DeKalb, Illinois, is a school dedicated to promoting excellence and engagement in teaching, learning, research, scholarship, artistry, and outreach within the African American community and the African diaspora. Established in 1971, the Center conducts research on the experiences of people of African descent and offers a minor in Black Studies. The Center supports the retention of Black students, hosts lectures, workshops, conferences, and student-oriented activities, and provides advising and assistance to student organizations. The Center also offers community service and learning opportunities, including study abroad trips. With a focus on cultural understanding, intellectual development, and social justice, the Center for Black Studies serves as a collaborative and supportive space on campus for students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
