Dearborn Observatory
Dearborn Observatory, located at 2131 Tech Drive in Evanston, Illinois, is a popular tourist attraction known for its Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA). While April tour dates are currently at capacity, visitors can join the waitlist or opt for walk-in tours on Fridays at 10:00 PM. There is no fee for the Friday night observation hour, but groups of 10 or more must make a refundable deposit. The dome does not have heating or air conditioning, so guests are advised to dress accordingly. Tours are led by Ph.D. and undergraduate students majoring in Physics & Astronomy, who are happy to answer questions. Please note that the Dearborn Observatory is not ADA-accessible and requires climbing several staircases to reach the telescope. CIERA Astronomer Evenings are special monthly programs where visitors can meet experts from Northwestern's CIERA and participate in interactive demonstrations and Q&A sessions. These evenings are free and open to all, with no reservation required. Children are welcome to attend as well.
