Pahukini Heiau
Pahukini Heiau is a historic Hawaiian temple site located in Kaneohe, Hawaii, United States. This heiau, or sacred place, is of the highest chiefly order and is situated in the middle of the now closed Kapaa landfill. Despite its unlikely setting, efforts have been made by community groups and individuals over the past 30 years to protect and make this heiau more accessible to the public. The heiau is described as a monumental example of Hawaiian engineering knowledge and religious dedication, dating back to around 1110 A.D. It was built by High Chief Olopana for human sacrifices during times of war to seek favor from the god of war, Kukailimoku. The heiau is now covered by tall grasses and invasive plants, making it almost invisible to passersby.
