Pūpūkea Beach Park
Pūpūkea Beach Park is a beautiful park and tourist attraction located on the north shore of O‘ahu, in Haleiwa, Hawaii. It is situated at 59-727 Kamehameha Highway and is easily accessible by car or bus. The park is part of the Marine Life Conservation District (MLCD), which includes popular swimming areas such as Shark’s Cove and Three Tables. Shark’s Cove is known for its excellent snorkeling opportunities, with depths reaching up to 20 feet. Three Tables offers great diving conditions with interesting features like ledges, arches, and lava tubes. Waimea Bay, located nearby, is a popular spot for swimming and surfing. During the winter months, the area can experience dangerous currents and waves, so caution is advised. Lifeguards are on duty at Waimea Bay, and a fire station is located near the tidepool area. Overall, Pūpūkea Beach Park is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to enjoy the natural beauty of the Hawaiian coast.
Polihale State Park
Polihale State Park, located at Lower Saki Mana Road in Waimea, Hawaii, is a stunning beach park that rewards visitors who brave a long and rutted dirt road with a breathtaking experience. This park is a popular tourist attraction, offering picnicking and tent camping on a wild coastline with a large sand beach backed by dunes. Visitors can enjoy swimming during calm conditions in the summer, as well as shore fishing and scenic views of the high sea cliffs of the Nāpali Coast. However, it is important to monitor local surf and weather reports before visiting the park, as the road leading to the park is unimproved and may become impassable during heavy rains. Four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended, as rental car companies may prohibit their vehicles from accessing the park. Due to overuse and abuse, Polihale State Park has faced temporary closures in the past. The State Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of State Parks is working on improving park management and enforcing park rules to prevent further closures. Community feedback is being gathered through open house talk story sessions and virtual meetings to identify potential improvements and management policies. Overnight camping at Polihale has reopened for stays beginning August 14, 2022, with reservations available online.
Shark’s Cove
Shark’s Cove is a natural feature located in Haleiwa, Hawaii, United States. It is part of the Marine Life Conservation District (MLCD) which also includes Waimea Bay Beach Parks. Shark’s Cove is a popular site for snorkeling, with fairly shallow depths ranging up to 20 feet. Diving conditions are better outside the cove, where caves can be found. The area to the left of the cove offers excellent night diving. Three Tables cove, located at the district’s southern end, is named for the flat sections of reef visible at low tide. Snorkeling and diving conditions are good in this area as well. Waimea Bay is known for swimming and surfing, with some coral growth in the water off the rocky point. It is important to note that during winter months, current and wave conditions can become extremely dangerous in all areas of the MLCD. Lifeguards are on duty at Waimea Bay, but not at Three Tables or Shark’s Cove. Visitors can access the area by taking Kamehameha Highway from Hale‘iwa or Kahuku to Waimea. Parking is available at both beach parks, and bus service to the area is available daily.
