Chief John Ross House
β OpenWelcome to the Chief John Ross House, a captivating museum located at 200 East Lake Avenue, Rossville, Georgia. As the oldest remaining structure in Northwest Georgia, this historic site offers a unique glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of the region. Built around 1797 by John McDonald, a Scottish trader with shifting allegiances to France, Spain, England, and the United States, the house stands as a testament to the complex interactions between European settlers and the Cherokee people. John McDonald, who was married to a mixed-race Cherokee woman, laid the foundation for a family legacy that would profoundly impact Cherokee history. Their daughter, Mollie, married another Scottish trader, Daniel Ross, and together they had a son, John Ross, who would rise to prominence as the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Tribe in 1828. During this turbulent period, the Georgia legislature enacted laws to confiscate Cherokee land, while Congress approved the Indian Removal Act, marking a significant chapter in American history.
