The park was officially opened on August 25, 2018, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Lakeland Mayor Bill Mutz. The park was donated by Lake Gibson Village in honor of Douglas M. Cook, the founder of the village. Cook's family, including his mother, widow, son, and siblings, were present at the ceremony, along with Pro Football Hall of Famer Ray Lewis.
