Mandalay Wreck
Mandalay Wreck is a popular tourist attraction located in Florida, United States. The schooner Mandalay ran aground on Long Reef on New Years Day, 1966, and now lies in the eastern part of Biscayne National Park. Designed by John G. Alden Naval Architects, Inc., the steel hulled schooner was originally named Hardi Biou and later renamed Valor before becoming Mandalay. The luxurious vessel was beautifully outfitted with mahogany, brass, and ivory, and had a teak deck. Unfortunately, Mandalay was grounded due to a miscalculation by Captain Asmund [Jim] Gjevick, causing the passengers and crew to be rescued by Coast Guard helicopters in windy conditions with 10-foot waves. Scavengers stripped the vessel of valuable items before salvage tugs could arrive, leaving only the skeleton of the ship embedded on Long Reef. Today, Mandalay Wreck is one of the best shallow dive spots in Biscayne National Park, offering visitors a unique and historical underwater experience.
