The wetlands within the park filter water as it flows through the Palm Beach Renewable Energy Park and into the Florida Everglades watershed. Recycled materials such as plastic lumber and crushed concrete are used to create boardwalks, benches, and trail paths throughout the park. During the development of the SWA landfill and waste-to-energy facility, 300 acres of natural area were set aside as a conservation area. Within this conservation area, a large rookery provides a home for thousands of native birds, including the endangered Snail Kite and threatened Wood Stork.
