Carla Madison Recreation Center

"Disclaimer: this review is for the city and upper management of the Carla Madison rec centers, not the employees who work there, who are all awesome. What could you possibly be thinking closing the largest rec center in the city on the first week day of every week and reducing the hours by close to 30 percent on other days? Do you think we're stupid? Considering we fund this place with both our memberships AND our taxes, it is utterly unacceptable to reduce hours this much. Not to mention the fact that you shut the place down if the almighty weathermen predict more than 3 inches of snow (like this MaSsIvE snow storm today of about 6 inches and perfectly clear roads). Obviously, this is because probably 95% of staff are paid hourly, so closing whenever you have a chance is a great way to save money and deprive your staff of wages they should be able to get. This is DENVER, people. If people are still going to their jobs, (which they undoubtedly are, considering every other business on Colfax is still open), you should be open for your paying members. That's how it works when people pay you for something. Otherwise you're quite literally giving us less than we pay for. Also, can't you send an email to your members to say when you've closed? This big shiny rec center is great until you realize the city isn't willing to pay for it to function as a legitimate public utility, which is what recreation centers are supposed to be. People like us go here instead of private gyms because they feel more community oriented, and our memberships support employment and other services. But if ya'll are closing one day a week so you don't have to pay your staff, you're clearly not prioritizing public health in budgeting for this city. Oh yeah, and the urinals upstairs are sloped in this weird way that your pee bounces off the surface and sprays all over your shins. It's gross. Put some urinal cakes in there something. And the low flow hand dryers instead of paper towels, which blow a luke warm air with all the force of a summer breeze, do absolutely nothing, so I'd be willing to bet some of the people in there just decide not to wash their hands. So, there are probably a lot of people walking around with pee on them in the gym."

"New hours are horrible! I bought a membership at this gym so I could workout before work. Now the gym is closed on Mondays and they don’t open until 6am on the other week days…. Wish I could get a refund or the gym was transparent regarding the upcoming time changes"

"I really like this facility but am bummed by the new hours and them being closed on Mondays. Monday sets the tone for the week, so being unable to go to the gym that day kind of throws everything off."

"Carla Madison is a great gym. It's always clean and the staff is friendly. Abby has the best conditioning classes. The only problem with the gym really is that the high schoolers will come over and make a huge mess and literally run into people in the hallway and gym. It's like they don't see you. I don't think they should kick them out, but they should encourage manners and appropriate sports wear in the gym. These kids have shown up in lingerie and it makes me so uncomfortable. I recommend the classes but not the gym part of the rec center."

"Nice recreation center. Best one I have been to so far. Weight room can get a little crowded, but it depends on what time you go (and that goes for any gym included the Colorado Athletic Club at four times the price). It also has an outdoor slackline area and ping-pong tables."
