California Karate Dojo is a community-based martial arts program located at 311 South Citrus Street in West Covina, California. Since 2005, we have been proud to serve the West Covina community and surrounding areas with our traditional karate instruction. Our structured curriculum focuses on developing self-defense skills and strong character attributes for both youth and adult students.
At California Karate Dojo, we cater to students of all levels, from beginners to elite-level athletes, with ages ranging from 5 years old to over 70 . Our primary disciplines include Shotokan and Kenpo Karate, as well as weapons training and other forms of self-defense such as Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, and grappling.
Our philosophy is that martial arts is more than just an activity – it is part of one's identity. Through our purposeful and disciplined approach to training, students not only learn valuable self-defense techniques but also build confidence, discipline, and respect.
Classes at California Karate Dojo are memorization intensive, with students expected to retain past knowledge in order to progress in rank. Our examinations and testings are cumulative, ensuring that students continually revisit and reinforce their skills.
Sensei Scott Heydenfeldt, with over 35 years of martial arts experience, leads the instruction at California Karate Dojo. He has trained hundreds of students of all ages and coached numerous competitors at all ability levels. With a background in banking and securities brokerage, as well as a B.S. in Business Management, Sensei Heydenfeldt brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his teaching.
