Established in January 1934 as the West Willow Station in a modest one-room storeroom, our library has grown and evolved, earning its current name in 1941 and settling into its spacious 6,500-square-foot building in August 1957. Named in honor of Bret Harte, a renowned nineteenth-century writer celebrated for his captivating California Gold Rush tales, our library continues to inspire and educate patrons of all ages. Please note that in observance of Labor Day, all Long Beach Public Library (LBPL) locations and services, including phone lines, will be closed from Saturday, August 31 through Monday, September 2. Our day-use areas are open to the public, and bathrooms are available at most locations. In some areas, please be prepared to pack it in and pack it out to help preserve the natural beauty.
Houghton Park

The park was originally donated in 1924 by the Houghton family in memory of Col. Sherman Otis Houghton and his wife Eliza Donner Houghton. The park features palm trees planted by Stanley Houghton, and the community recreation center now stands where the barn once stood. Visitors to Houghton Park can enjoy three baseball diamonds, a soccer field, tennis courts, basketball courts, and a skate park. The park also has a playground, picnic areas, and restrooms. The park's facilities include a Teen Center, Senior Center, and Afterschool/Learning Hub Program. The park also offers youth sports programs for the community.
Martin Luther King Jr. Park
