The Highland Emergency Medicine Residency Program, located at 1411 East 31st Street in Oakland, California, is a renowned health institution with a focus on diversity, community, quality, compassion, longevity, and dynamism. Established in 1980 by Bob Dailey M.D., one of the pioneers of Emergency Medicine, the program is one of the oldest in the country. Originally a two-year program, it transitioned to a four-year training program in 1988 and now matches between 10-12 residents per year. Highland Hospital, where the program is based, has been serving the community since 1927 with a mission to provide quality healthcare to all residents regardless of their ability to pay. As part of the Alameda Health System, Highland Hospital is one of three inpatient facilities in the area and serves as the only level 1 trauma center for the East Bay.
