Fuller Poles
Fuller Poles, located at 16th & Q in Sacramento, California, is a unique and colorful sculpture created by the designstudio of renowned graphic designer Saul Bass in the early 1960s. Originally designed for the Fuller O'Brien Paint Company, the sculpture consists of 81 poles set in a 9 x 9 grid, each painted a different color. Over the years, the poles have been repainted and reduced to around half of the original colors. The design was intended to be freestanding but a steel grid was later added to prevent movement. Considered a Mid-Century icon in Sacramento, the Fuller Poles showcase the bold and minimalist style of the era. Despite being on private property, efforts have been made to preserve and celebrate this unique piece of art, with recent repaintings and special events honoring its history. The fate of the Fuller Poles lies with the property owner, but their significance in the city's architectural and design history remains undeniable.
